MECO Chairman writes a letter to the Mayor of Kaohsiung over his racist and discriminatory connotation

Previously, we write a provocative article regarding the discriminatory remark made by  Kaohsiung Mayor Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) in his pejorative slant of the term "Maria."

“I believe witnessing ‘Marias’ become teachers would cause a clash in the hearts of the people of Kaohsiung and Taiwan’s population at large. This is something that needs to be overcome; likely a huge internal conflict,” this was the remark made by  Kaohsiung Mayor Han Kuo-yo last Wednesday.

This afternoon Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) Chairman Angelito Tan Banayo has taken an action and sent a letter to Kuomintang Mayor of Kaohsiung Han Kuo-yu defending the Filipino Migrant workers and the Philippines’ potential as a source of English-language teachers.

The MECO “uphold and protect their dignity, sacrifice, and contribution to national development from impetuous and undeserved labeling,”

“We particularly take exception to your use of the term ‘Marias’ in reference to our citizens, a terminology that has earned negative undertones when used to refer to foreign workers, ” Banayo said in his letter.

A big thanks to our MECO Chairman for taking action on this matter for upholding and protecting the dignity of Filipino Migrant Workers here in Taiwan.

I would like to add that the Philippines is the 4th Country in the world with 92% population can able to speak English as our second language.
