Single use medical devices found reused at hospitals in Taiwan

Reports shows that some hospitals in Taiwan reused and recycled some expensive “single use” medical devices on patients according to the investigative reports from United Evening News. The reports exposed these practice among hospitals in Taiwan.

Hospitals informed the patients that some expensive devices like a laparoscopic sealer costs NT$30,000 which is not covered by the medical insurance, if they want to buy a new one or choose the re-sterilized devices for a lower price.

32 out of 77 hospitals that provide electro surgeries advertise this kind of service. According to the hospitals it is done because the hospitals are trying to provide more options for the patients that cannot afford the full amount of payment.

These hospitals makes sure that every patients are aware to use the re-sterilized devices to save a hefty amount of money.
