Taiwan’s TSMC joins Intel and Samsung as the largest chip supplier in the first half of 2019

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) placed as the third largest chip supplier in the first half of 2019 joining Intel Corporation and Samsung Electronics Corp at the top, according to the research report of IC Insights.

TSMC posted US$14.85 billion in sales in the first six months of 2019. Another Taiwan IC designer company entered the top 15 as Mediatek has US$3.69 billion to take the 15th spot.

Joining Intel, Samsung and TSMC in the top five are another South Korean firm SK Hynix and US-based Micron Technology. Completing the top 10 are American IC designer Broadcom Inc, IC designer Qualcomm Inc., chipmaker Texas Instruments Inc., Japan's Toshiba, and IC designer NVidia Corp.

The combined sales of the top 15 companies fell 18% from a year earlier to US$148.72 billion in the first half of 2019, which is normally low in the first season for the semiconductor market.
