Mass shooting in Thailand kills 21 and 31 hurt


Late Saturday night, February 8, 2020,  in the rural region of Nakhon Ratchasima in Thailand. A mass shooting had happened bringing an initial report of 21 death and 31 hurt after a gunman had fired randomly in Terminal 21 Korat Mall.

The suspect was identified as a soldier namely Sgt. Maj. Jakrapanth Thomma assigned in the 22nd Ammunition Battalion. According to Thailand Defense Ministry spokesman Lt. Gen. Kongcheep Tantrawanich.

According to the initial investigation, three people were killed when the suspect opened fire at the army barracks.

 “He stole an army vehicle and drove into the town center,” said police Lt Col Mongkol Kuptasiri.

According to the witnesses and in video footage, the suspect had indiscriminately fired everyone he will meet, even on the cars he will fire. People inside the mall had panicked after several gunshots heard. Police forced has immediately rushed to the crime scene and evacuated some mall-goers. Others are still trapped inside the mall while the operation is ongoing.

A police officer said nine civilians had been evacuated from the mall and security forces were checking whether any remained there. Reports earlier said up to 20 people had been taken, hostage.

“The perpetrator is still in the basement and it doesn’t look as though he has hostages, We are getting close to him.” according to the Police

Reports emerged late on Saturday night of renewed gunfire within the building. Automatic weapons were reported to have been heard before dawn local time as ambulances prepared to evacuate the wounded.

All floors except for the lower ground level have reportedly been secured by officers. Footage taken outside the mall late on Saturday night showed crowds of people running out of the building, some clutching children and supporting elderly people.
