PNP says won't follow Duterte's order to shoot troublemakers

MANILA - The Philippine National Police on Thursday said it would not shoot anyone dead following President Rodrigo Duterte's warning against troublemakers late Wednesday night.

Duterte, in a surprise televised address, said he would not hesitate to have leftists arrested or killed by authorities.

Duterte’s statements came just hours after a group of Quezon City residents from Sitio San Roque protested along EDSA until they were arrested and dispersed by authorities for violating the enhanced community quarantine.

The residents were supposedly protesting the lack of food assistance from the local government.

The PNP chief said he has ordered the filing of charges against those arrested in the rally.

Gamboa added that PNP does not condone abuse in implementing the law as he said the agency was conducting an investigation on a Manila police officer who was caught on video hitting and cursing a resident for violating home quarantine.

Physical punishment must not be imposed on arrested curfew violators, according to the Joint Task Force Corona Virus Shield, tasked to implement government's guidelines on the Luzon lockdown.
