Taiwan Researchers successfully obtained a sample of coronavirus

According to Health and Welfare Minister Chen Shih-chung, she announced that Taiwan Researchers had successfully obtained a sample of the novel coronavirus, which could lead to the development of a vaccine against the virus when the time comes.

The virus first erupted in Wuhan City, China this past December and was declared a global emergency by the World Health Organization.

As of Sunday morning, the virus had already been reported in 14,380 confirmed cases and 304 had died, while almost 160 confirmed cases had been reported in other countries around the world including the 10 people in Taiwan.

The sample was obtained from the respiratory tract of one of the 10 patients in Taiwan, according to Chen.  After China, Taiwan is the fourth country followed by Japan and Australia working to successfully isolate a sample of the virus.

According to the researcher at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases and Vaccinology Liu Chia-Chyi the aforementioned sample can be used to generate a lab-grown version of the virus and allow researchers to study how viruses affect  to its hosts.

According to Chang Gung University Research Center for Emerging Viral Infections leader Shih Shin-ru, the sample can also help speed up the development of diagnostic tests and serve as a foundation for vaccine development and cure among  infected by the virus.  She also said that in theory, the 2019-nCov vaccines could produce small quantities in five years.
